It's the event that makes folks from other parts of the Country think we're crazy. And we kind of are. It's Polar Bear Plunge season!

January and February are chock full opportunities to dive into the freezing waters of the Atlantic and then get drunk, I mean warm up later.

One of the biggest plunges of the season happens on the first day of the year. On Tuesday, January 1 it's the Sons of Ireland annual New Year’s Day Polar Bear Plunge in Asbury Park. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m., the plunge happens at 1 p.m., and The Nerds will be live at Convention Hall afterwards. This year there's an especially good reason to get freezin'.

The benefiting organization for this year's NYD Asbury Park Polar Bear Plunge is Mary's Place By The Sea. I couldn't think of a more deserving non-profit. Mary’s Place by the Sea is a respite home for women who are receiving treatment for cancer. They provide services that complement their resident's medical treatment, including oncology massage, nutrition education, individual counseling, Reiki, guided meditation, expressive writing, and yoga.
