It's summer, it's softball but even more than that it's people helping people and that's just how Christopher Calderone would have wanted things to be.

The 3rd Annual Co-Ed Softball Tournament that bears his name is in memory to the former Donovan Catholic baseball player who was tragically killed in a car accident on November 9, 2015.

The tournament serves as a fundraiser for a scholarship, run thru Donovan Catholic, that will provide financial assistance to several high school and college students locally and throughout New Jersey.

"College is so expensive now, the universities...I mean we're going $40, 50, 60,000 for some of them," Brenda Calderone said. "This gives them a little bit of money, even if it's just for one class."

Held every year to honor the memory of former Donovan Catholic baseball player Christopher Calderone, the 3rd Annual Co-Ed Softball Tournament being held this month seeks to carry on his prideful spirit.

Christopher played baseball right through graduating high school in 2014.

He pitched his father the idea of forming a softball team.

They played through the summer of 2015.

That November the Donovan Catholic alumni was tragically killed in a car accident.

To keep his memory going, his Mom Brenda and Dad Lew, put together this tournament in 2016 to raise money to grant scholarships and help others the way Christopher did.

"We put together this softball tournament with the Brick Township Recreation Department and they let us use their sports complex at Drum Point in Brick," Brenda said.

The spirit surrounding this tournament and what its purpose is, is just how Christopher would have wanted things to be.

"Christopher was a great human being, he went out of his way to be kind to others and was always there for friends and family," Brenda said.

The 16-teams are all set for the June 30 tournament in Brick Township, but fans of all ages are still being invited to attend the tournament and help fund this scholarship program.

This annual softball tournament is a touching tribute to a young man whose spirit lives on through the lives of others.

"He (Christopher) was just an all around good kid and I think he would just love, love, love this," Brenda said. "In fact, if he could attend, this would be the best day of his life."
