9/11 Remembrances and Memorials at the Jersey Shore

9/11 Memorial at Mount Mitchill Scenic Overlook

The 11th anniversary of the September 11th attacks is this Tuesday, and there are several memorials and ceremonies planned in our area.

Saturday, September 8th

The annual Walk With Joe Memorial 5K Walk takes place at 10 a.m. at Monmouth Battlefield State Park.

The walk honors the memory of Manalapan resident Patrick “Joe” Driscoll who was among the victims aboard Flight 93 on September 11, 2001.

The walk benefits a number of charities including the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, PA; the American Recreational Military Services (ARMS); Monmouth Battlefield State Park; Monmouth County Mount Mitchell Park; and several others.

Tuesday, September 11th

Holmdel Township
The 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony will be held in front of Holmdel Township Town Hall. The ceremony is from 7:30 – 8:30 p.m.

Mayor Patrick Impreveduto will speak, a high school group will sing, and names of victims with a connection to the town will be read out loud. Friends and family members will be able to lay flowers and light a candle for their loved one on the town’s 9/11 memorial.

Seating will be limited, and parking will be available at the Community Center next to Town Hall.


Monmouth County 9/11 Memorial Ceremony
The Monmouth County Park System hosts a Memorial Ceremony at Mount Mitchill Scenic Overlook, off Rt. 36 in Atlantic Highlands, the site of Monmouth County’s 9/11 Memorial.

The event is rain or shine, beginning at 5PM, with several speakers planned.

Parking will be available at East Point Plaza, 2390 Rt. 36, Atlantic Highlands, with shuttle buses to and from the Memorial from 5-9pm.

Mount Mitchill Scenic Overlook will also have extended hours from Sunday, September 9 – Tuesday, September 11 from 8:00am to 11:00pm.

Toms River

The East Dover firehouse (629 Fischer Boulevard) hosts their annual memorial service at 9:58 a.m., to commemorate the collapse of the first tower. Attendees are asked to arrive no later than 9:45 a.m.

The service will include local students and emergency service workers.
