I had a fabulous birthday, and here's how I spent it.

I took the day off from work, not wanting to get up at 3:30 am. That was my birthday gift to myself. When my friends and family asked me what I wanted to do for my birthday so that they could make plans with me, I thanked them and said that what I really wanted for myself was to have no obligations.

Because sometiimes it's just nice to see how the day unfolds and not feel like you have to be on a schedule to get somewhere.

When I woke up on my birthday (without that 3:30 am alarm), I saw a bunch of messages from morning show listeners wishing me a Happy Birthday since Lou wrote a blog about my birthday. So that was a nice gift!

My boys gave me some wonderful, heartfelt cards and then I grabbed my coffee and sat at the Manasquan Inlet to watch the boats go by. When the boys were ready (having done all of the housework so that I didn't have to lift a finger), they met me there and we went out for a fabulous breakfast at Mariner's Cove in Brielle.

Benj and I then went to Freehold Raceway Mall to stroll around and pick up a couple of things, and had a lovely sushi lunch at PF Changs.

When we got home, after the surprise of finding birthday flowers had been delivered,I headed to the beach to enjoy a gorgeous summer late-afternoon and early-evening relaxing in the sand under the sun.

Then, just as I was wondering how to end this great and relaxing birthday, a good friend of mine called and asked if we could come to her house for an impromptu get-together with a couple of our girlfriends. We'd pick up pizza and all the kids could swim in her pool. And, because it wasn't planned and I was feeling up for it, we went

It turned out to be a lovely evening full of good friends, laughter, wine, pizza, birthday cupcakes, flowers, gifts and happy kids splashing in the pool on a warm summer night.

Sometimes the simplest, most unplanned birthdays turn out to be the best : )

I must also add to this story the great Birthday Eve I had -- when my friends and neighbors knocked on my door Sunday evening and brought me outside for a mini birthday celebration right in the middle of our street, complete with TWO homemade birthday cakes and gifts!!! I am blessed.
