Astonishing Look at Hurricane Sandy by the Numbers

Now that Super Storm Sandy has passed and the cleanup continues, here are the stats proving what all of us at the Shore already know; this was a devastating storm.

HURRICANE SANDY: BY THE NUMBERS

  • 27.94 inches – Sandy’s pressure at landfall. The lowest on record in this area.
  • 39 mph – Sandy’s top sustained winds
  • 87 mph – Peak wind gust at Sandy Hook. Surf City had the highest in Jersey at 89 mph.
  • 14,500 – Number of JCP&L workers it took to get the power restored.
  • 2,535 – Number of utility poles brought down by the storm.
  • 65,000 – Amount of trees removed by JCP&L.
  • 180 – Miles of electrical wire delivered to JCP&L to restore downed lines.
  • 280 – Police officers assisting the State Police. They were from 8 different states.
  • 54,000 – Tons of sand that it took to close the water breach in Mantoloking. It also took 200 tons of stone, 2,200 tons of concrete rubble.
  • 92 – Number of babies born during the storm at the five Meridian hospitals in Monmouth and Ocean counties.
  • 3,500 – Amount of New Jersey residents put up in shelters by the Red Cross.
  • 871 – Number of FEMA inspectors in the field.
  • 350 million – Gallons of water removed from disaster affected areas by the Army Corp of Engineers.

This is also another great opportunity to once again thank the first responders, utility crews, police, National Guard and everyone involved during and after the storm.
