BELMAR — A woman sleeping inside a home was safely evacuated from her home when a fire broke out early Wednesday morning.

Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty said the fire "pretty much completely destroyed" the single-family home on River Road (Route 35) near K Street started abound  around 4 a.m.

Photographer Bud McCormick said the aluminum siding was melted off the house next door by the flames.

Doherty did not disclose the name of the residents, but said that he the family and that he and his staff family's situation would be assessed and  "see what needs to be done for them moving forward." The American Red Cross New Jersey chapter was assisting with emergency shelter and other needs.

Route 35 was closed in both directions between 8th and 16th Avenues for the cleanup and investigation of the fire but reopened around 8 a.m.
