Chris Christie Delivers Keynote With A Big Splash Of Jersey
Governor Chris Christie wowed the party faithful at the Republican National Convention in Tampa last night.Christie hit all the GOP notes and made sure to stay true to his New Jersey roots at the same time.
“This stage and this moment are very improbable for me,” proclaimed Christie. “A New Jersey Republican delivering the keynote address to our national convention, from a state with 700,000 more Democrats than Republicans. A New Jersey Republican stands before you tonight. Proud of my party, proud of my state and proud of my country.”
Christie talked about his mother and father, his wife and kids and growing up in the Garden State. He talked of leadership and claimed that it is lacking in the Oval Office. The Governor explained that it’s better to be respected than loved because respect can grow into real love.
“We are the United States of America.,” said Christie. “Now we must lead the way our citizens live. To lead as my mother insisted I live, not by avoiding truths, especially the hard ones, but by facing up to them and being the better for it. We cannot afford to do anything less. I know because this was the challenge in New Jersey.”
The Governor detailed his accomplishments such as public employee pension and health benefit reforms, teacher tenure reforms, and closing budget gaps without raising taxes.
Christie explained, “The disciples of yesterday’s politics underestimated the will of the people. They assumed our people were selfish; that when told of the difficult problems, tough choices and complicated solutions, they would simply turn their backs, that they would decide it was every man for himself. Instead, the people of New Jersey stepped up and shared in the sacrifice. They rewarded politicians who led instead of politicians who pandered.”
“We need politicians to care more about doing something and less about being something” said the Governor. “Believe me, if we can do this in a blue state with a conservative Republican Governor, Washington is out of excuses. Leadership delivers. Leadership counts. Leadership matters. We have this leader for America.”
To great applause from a friendly crowd Christie said, “We ended an era of absentee leadership without purpose or principle in New Jersey. It’s time to end this era of absentee leadership in the Oval Office and send real leaders to the White House. America needs Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan and we need them right now.”
