Literacy Volunteers of Monmouth County is seeking volunteer tutors to teach basic literacy and English as a Second Language to local residents in Monmouth County. Phase One of the Monmouth County Child Advocacy Center has become a reality thanks to your donations and support but the work isn't done. Work on Phase 2 is underway to expand and enhance the facility on Kozlowski Road in Freehold.
Victims of child abuse in Monmouth County now have one place to go so the Prosecutor's Office,
local law enforcement, DYFS, mental health, medical and victim
advocates will all work together under one roof to minimize the

CASA Of Ocean County - There are currently more than 12,000 children in the foster care system in New Jersey who are the victims of abuse and neglect. Over 650 of those children are from Ocean County alone. Many of these children become trapped in the court and child welfare systems spending their childhood moving from one temporary foster home to another. YOU can make a difference by becoming a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA). The goal of the CASA volunteer is to facilitate placement of a child into safe, permanent home. We are looking for individuals with a desire to help children – no special background is needed. CASA volunteers receive 30 hours of training prior to being appointed by the court as an advocate in addition to ongoing supervision from the CASA of Ocean County staff. The Barnegat Bay Buddy Program is a simple and easy stewardship program in which citizens can earn points by taking actions that will reduce the pollution entering the Bay. In addition, the Barnegat Bay Buddy Challenge helps individuals become better Bay stewards, and will incorporate them into a larger movement for collective citizen action to help Barnegat Bay. Clean Ocean Action (COA), Save Barnegat Bay (SBB), Ocean County Freeholders, and Beachwood Township are partners in this program. 19th Annual Long Branch Oceanfest
The Point spends the day at the 19th annual Oceanfest Independence Day celebration held on the oceanfront Promenade from 10AM-10PM rain or shine presented by The City of Long Branch and the Greater Long Branch Chamber of Commerce. Oceanfest is a free, family-friendly celebration that takes place along the half-mile stretch of the oceanfront Promenade between Seven Presidents Park, the Ocean Place Resort & Spa and is adjacent to Pier Village. Oceanfest offers something for young and old alike, and attracts residents and visitors from far and wide culminating in the the Jersey Shore’s biggest fireworks display at 9:00PM with a musical simulcast on Point! The Long Branch Department of Recreation will hold their annual 3 vs. 3 basketball tournament in the southern most parking lot at the Ocean Place Resort. American Red Cross Rock ‘n Ride Bike Tour

New Jersey's tall ship, the AJ Meerwald, begins her 2009 sailing season in April and there are many opportunities available for people who want to get involved. Both those who enjoy being on the water, and those who have always wanted to try their sea legs, are welcome. Shipboard volunteers help with many aspects of operating the tall ship, help present programs to students and passengers, conduct dockside tours and so much more. The Meerwald travels to ports throughout the state and region. Some volunteers only come aboard when the ship is nearby, while others like to travel from port to port with the crew. Meerwald's 2009 ports of call will include Camden, Trenton, Burlington, Philadelphia, Beach Haven, Jersey City, Alpine, and Cape May. The New Jersey Poison Information and Education System (NJPIES) has been the state’s regional drug and poison information system for the past 25 years. NJPIES is a non-profit organization that offers poison emergency and drug information services to NJ residents via its hotline (1-800-222-1222). Trained health professionals (doctor, nurse, or pharmacist) are available 24 hours a day / 7 days a week to assist callers with poison emergencies, poison prevention information, drug information, food poisoning, carbon monoxide poisoning, treatment advice following bites/stings, medication side effects and interactions, etc. All calls are free and confidential. You can order quality food (no seconds or expired products) that retail for $55-$80 at local food stores for only $30. Each basic unit ($30) of food contains enough food to feed a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 school aged children) for about one week or a single person for a month. There is no limit to the number of basic units you can buy. This food is for everyone who wants to save money on their grocery bill. There are no applications or income restrictions. 180 Turning Lives Around a private, non-profit organization dedicated to serving families affected by domestic violence, sexual assault and abuse, will offer a 10 week specialized domestic violence support group specifically geared towards families that have been affected by domestic violence for a new group forming in Hazlet. For over 30 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Monmouth County has been recognized as the premier one-to-one mentoring organization serving Monmouth County. Mentoring is available to all children (ages 6-14) residing within Monmouth County who face social, emotional, or academic challenges. They are seeking volunteers who are able to spend 4-6 hours per month mentoring a child. If you’re over 18, live or work in Monmouth County, and have a valid driver’s license, then you’ve already met the preliminary eligibility criteria to help a child by being a mentor with our organization. Ocean County Hunger Relief is collecting children's clothes, coats, & shoes (sizes infant to teen), book bags, and lunch boxes for needy children in Ocean County. There is a desperate need because the organization almost never has these items. Especially needed are baby items such as diapers, wipes, shampoo, baby wash, etc. The children receiving the donations are either very poor or homeless.
