It's a fear shared by thousands of Monmouth and Ocean County residents, including me. It's the fear of flying.

I have flown before. I never really liked it. And then one day, I decided that the easiest way to deal with the fear was to eliminate the possibility of flying. If I never got on a plane, I'd never have to address it.

Many smart people try to logically explain to me how irrational the fear is. They are right, but that doesn't matter. That doesn't do the trick. Neither do the very comforting stats about the safety of flying. I wish they did.

So what do I do now? My wife wants to travel and I don't want to keep saying no. Logic doesn't seem to work on an irrational fear. So today I'm going to talk to a professional about it. I have been told there are stress management tools that may help.

There would be nothing greater than putting this behind me, but I feel like it's a big mountain to climb. I will keep you updated through the process. Hopefully my journey through this fear may help you or someone you love. Wish me luck!
