SEASIDE PARK — Superstorm Sandy and the boardwalk fire of 2013 have claimed another victim: Funtown Pier.

A lawyer for owner William Major told the Seaside Park planning board that amusements will not return to the pier after the board voted Tuesday night to not allow rides taller than 100 feet to be built, according to the Lavallette-Seaside & Ortley Beach Shorebeat.

The pier would need rides 300 feet high in order to be economically viable, attorney Stephen Leone told the board, according to the news website.

Shorebeat reported that many residents spoke against increasing the height in order to maintain the borough's reputation as a quieter alternative to its neighbor Seaside Heights. Leone said Major will develop another plan for the property, according to the report.

The pier was damaged during Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and took heavy damage in the boardwalk fire of 2013. The pier's iconic ferris wheel, while still standing after the storm, was taken down in 2013.

The planning board approved a plan in May 2015 for a proposed beach buggy that would take passengers up and down the beach on a track.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
