While paid politicians are embroiled in war over a border wall, people and families here at the Jersey Shore are either working without being paid, or are not working and not being paid. First off, I don’t care what side you are on – but it should never get to this. Government workers should never have to fear that they will not be able to pay for food on the table.

Ocean and Monmouth Counties: it’s time to roll up our sleeves and do our part to help our neighbors in need during this shutdown. Here are three ways that you can help furloughed government workers at the Jersey Shore:

Donate your money: GoFundMe CEO, Rob Solomon started a donation page dedicated to furloughed government workers and their families during the shutdown. The donation page is run by the actual website and company, GoFundMe, so it’s completely legitimate. If you have an extra couple of dollars laying around this month, I would highly recommend donating to this page.

Donate your time: Workers and their families are likely going to resort to going to soup kitchens here at the Jersey Shore as the deadline for their second paycheck approaches amid no compromise between Democrats and Republicans in Washington. Donating your time at Jersey Shore soup kitchens will not only help furloughed government workers, but also the homeless in our community.

Donate your food: Another option for furloughed workers is to go to food pantries throughout the Jersey Shore. There are even some food pantries that are already reporting that workers are taking advantage of their services. One food pantry in Toms River says that they will be extending hours for furloughed government workers and their families. With increasing demand, your extra can of soup or roll of toilet paper can help federal workers going without a paycheck this winter season.

Like I mentioned earlier, people on both sides of the aisle are very upset that the government shutdown has gone on this long. We live in the richest country in the world and there is absolutely no reason why our federal government should be sending out papers with “ideas” on how to bargain with landlords.

Please help and do your part for our furloughed neighbors this cold winter season.
