'River,' a 1-year-old Pitbull that was left in a cage in tidal water in Highlands will soon be looking for a new home.

Jennifer Vaz is the good Samaritan that rescued River, and she was given the first opportunity to adopt him from the Monmouth County SPCA.

Vaz did indeed adopt River, but once she took the dog home it became clear that River was not going to be the best fit with the dog that Jennifer already had. From all accounts River is a well behaved dog with no severe behavior issues.

On Saturday, Vaz returned River to the MCSPCA saying:

As a dog mother, dropping River off was the hardest thing that I've ever had to do. Even though I've never been a parent it feels like I'm losing a child.

There's a GoFundMe page set up by the previous owner for River's new family. As of this writing, $1,204 had been raised.

Ross Licitra, the Executive Director of the Monmouth County SPCA told NJ Advanced Media that:

We're looking for a foster to adopt, for someone who's going to keep him forever.

MCSPCA will be neutering River and conduct a "behavior assessment" to best match the dog with a new owner.
