There were some unusual gowns at the 2012 Emmy Awards, but it was those unconventional silhouettes, colors and styles that made the ladies wearing them truly stand out. We saw fashion risk-takers plus some stunners in basic black that wowed thanks to their styling.

It was tough to choose from so many curve-hugging ensembles, column dresses and head-turning gowns on the red carpet, but these were our five favorites.

    Amy Poehler

The 'Parks and Rec' star may have split with hubby Will Arnett a few weeks back, but she doesn't look any the worse for wear. Poehler elected for basic black with a little bit of sparkle in the fabric, which made it anything but boring -- and she looked amazing. Eat your heart out, Will.

    Elisabeth Moss

Everything about Moss's dress was unique and unexpected, and we can imagine that style mavens will be split over this number -- but we loved it for how unconventional and different it was. Its multi-chromatic color palette made it pop against her pale skin, and we're also suckers for that short-in-the-front, long-in-the-back hem.

    January Jones

A MILF in black, the 'Man Men' actress took the most basic of colors and upped it a notch with the fancy train and romantic, feminine layers -- plus the sexy, strappy silhouette was perfect for Jones' to-die-for figure. On another, curvier actress, this would have been a fashion fail, but this gown looks like it was made for January. Hot mama, indeed.

    Ginnifer Goodwin

There was lots of red (and colors in the red family) on the carpet this year, but the onetime 'Big Love' polygamist stunned with her red and nude, lace-overlay dress and ultra-feminine ankle strap heels, set off by her dramatic, boyish pixie cut.

    Sofia Vergara

Va-va-va-voom! The 'Modern Family' bombshell fired on all cylinders with this turquoise dress. The criss-crossed straps supported those bold and beautiful twins of hers, and the rest of the mermaid-silhouetted gown hugged every one of her infamous (we say "enviable) curves. The color was a perfect match for her sun-kissed skin tone, too. When you've got it, flaunt it, baby -- so Vergara was our pick for Best Dressed at the 2012 Emmys.
