Equestrian dies dies at Three-Day Event at Horse Park of NJ

A British citizen living in Michigan died in an accident during the Jersey Fresh International Three-Day Event in Allentown on Saturday.

"It is with deep regret that we announce that rider #52, Philippa Humphreys, 33, suffered fatal injuries in a fall at fence 16, the table, on the cross-country course of the CCI3," according to a statement from Dan Wunderlich, Chairman of the Event. “All of us connected with the Jersey Fresh International are deeply saddened by today’s tragic news and we extend our condolences to Philippa’s husband, Peter, and to her entire family."

The event is taking place at the Horse Park of New Jersey, an 185-acre facility just off Route 195 on the western border of Monmouth County.

Wunderlich said that Humphreys was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Hamilton where she was pronounced dead.

A horse seriously injured in the fall, Inoui Van Bost, was euthanized at the New Jersey Equine Clinic in Millstone according to Wunderlich, who said that Humphrey's own horse, a 13-year-old Dutch Warmblood/Thoroughbred gelding named Rich N Famous was not injured.

Humphreys was a member of the United States Evening Association which called her a "great friend to so many in the sport of Eventing." The organization set up a You Caring page  to help fund her daughter Millie's education.

The Jersey Fresh International is a qualifying selection event for the U.S. Olympic Eventing Team. It also helps determine participants for the United States and Canadian World Equestrian Games and Pan Am Games Teams.
