We weren’t expecting new music from Fergie in 2012 after she announced she wanted to take time off to hang out with husband Josh Duhamel and maybe have a baby. But she has returned as a solo artist with ‘Feel Alive,’ a dance track featuring rapper Pitbull.

The Black Eyed Peas singer’s main contribution to the song is the frequently-repeated hook, “Wake me up in the morning / Slow me down in the evening / Give me whatever you want to make me feel alive.” After her first appearance, electro whirls appear alongside a pulsing dance beat.

Pitbull’s cameo provides a lyrical nod to the Black Eyed Peas’ ‘Boom Boom Pow’: “I’m so 3000 and crazy / They so 2000 and hate / They want me to fall and fail / H-H-Hurry up and wait.” Sounding like will.i.am, DJ Poet also offers a verse, while Fergie sings, “I feel alive in this club.”

The new track is exciting, but it’s not necessarily a sign that the ‘Fergalicious’ singer is ready to release another solo album. ‘Feel Alive’ is taken from the soundtrack to the 3D film ‘Step Up Revolution,’ which also features music from M.I.A. and Jennifer Lopez.

Fergie hasn’t released a solo record since 2006′s ‘The Dutchess,’ which scored five Top 5 hits, including No. 1s ‘Big Girls Don’t Cry,’ ‘London Bridge’ and ‘Glamorous.’
