NEWARK — The  NJIT student who shot during a robbery attempt at a fraternity house in Newark was identified as 23-year-old Joseph Micalizzi of Freehold.

The college said Micalizzi was a junior majoring in mechanical engineering who made the dean's list during the fall semester. He was in his second year at NJIT after transferring from Brookdale Community College.

"This is a tragic time for Joe’s family, friends and the entire NJIT campus and we extend our thoughts and prayers to all affected. Plans for a memorial service will be announced," wrote NJIT in a message on its Facebook page.

Micalizzi was a 2011 graduate of Howell High School according to Rebecca Policastro, spokeswoman for the Freehold Regional High School District.

"Everyone is heartbroken by the tragic loss of one of our family members. Our thoughts and prayers are with Joseph Micalizzi’s loved ones at this difficult time," Policastro wrote in an email.

"Our heart goes out to the family and friends of Joseph Micalizzi a TKE brother on the NJIT campus, whose life was tragically ended far too soon.Together with University staff and students we unite in prayer. Christ have mercy," the Newman Catholic Club, which serves students at NJIT and Rutgers-Newark, said in a statement

Thomas S. Fennelly, chief assistant prosecutor for the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, said Micalizzi was shot twice about 3:22 a.m. Monday during a robbery attempt inside the Tau Kappa Epsilon house on the NJIT campus on Martin Luther King Boulevard.

It's the second fatal robbery of a college student in Newark's University Heights in less than two months.

Shani Patel, 21, of Toms River, and a junior at Rutgers University was shot in April during a robbery attempt.

NJIT has posted a $10,000 reward for information that leads to the capture and prosecution of suspects involved in the robbery.  The school said that there is no imminent threat to the NJIT campus.
