Charlie was found alone on the side of the road with a broken leg. He was then brought to an animal control facility that is forced to kill many of the animals it takes in. This story will bring tears to your eyes.

Here's the story from a loving, caring member of DC PAWS rescue group. Her name is Janine and she flew down to the Pickens County, South Carolina, animal control facility where she met Charlie. She writes:

"When we arrived at the shelter, we met Charlie. We were allowed to visit both the upper and lower shelters. The lower shelter houses dogs just surrendered and still within the ten day stray hold required by the city to determine if the owner of the dog or cat will come to collect their animals.

Charlie was in the upper shelter as his ten day stray hold was up. We opened the cage to see a miserable and scared dog. We placed a slip lead leash around his neck to see if he would come with us outside of the shelter. But Charlie couldn't stand. So we helped him up and he limped out of the shelter with us.

We placed him in our car because we were heading straight to our vet to determine what was wrong with his leg. It was not long before this smart and beautiful dog realized he was being rescued. He transformed from a scared and depressed dog to a happy and sweet dog who did nothing but give everyone around him kisses.

Charlie was given x-rays at the vet and we learned that he had a broken leg that had healed incorrectly. Poor Charlie was left for ten days on a concrete floor, unable to move on his broken leg, to wait for his stray hold to end. Luckily for Charlie, his ten day hold was up just as we arrived. Such a great and sweet dog deserves a second chance at life and a loving forever home.

DC PAWS obtained a referral from their vet for surgery for Charlie. his leg needs to be rebroken and set with metal plates. The total cost of Charlie's vetting is approximately $3,500. The cost of any dog is $350, no matter the cost of the vetting the animal needs. As a non-profit, this is a tough price, considering we don't pass any of it on, but Charlie is worth it, and will make a great addition to any family."

Janine says that dogs like Charlie are the reason her non-profit (501c3) organization works so hard with shelters that have no other options. She says all dogs and cats deserve a second chance at a loving and happy life, so a donation to Charlie or for any one of the animals at this special rescue gives them a second chance!
