‘Glee’ Dedicating ‘Heart’ Episode to Whitney Houston
The decision to have Amber Riley’s character, Mercedes, sing Whitney Houston‘s ‘I Will Always Love You’ on this week’s ‘Heart’ episode of ‘Glee‘ was planned weeks ago. But given Houston’s tragic death over the weekend, the show will now be dedicating the entire episode to her.
Entertainment Weekly says the show will add a note at the end of the broadcast honoring the late singer. EW tracked down ‘Glee’ music producer Adam Anders at the Grammy Awards and asked him about the fact that the show will be featuring Houston’s biggest hit just a few days after her passing.
“It’s a really crazy coincidence,” Anders acknowledges. “We are shell-shocked. I was talking to Amber last night and she was really in a daze about it. It really flipped her out. She just met her on Thursday. Whitney had a huge impact on her.”
Riley’s take on the epic ballad is faithful to Houston’s 1992 recording, which became the first song in history to spend 14 weeks at No. 1. After Houston died, it quickly became the most-downloaded song on amazon.com, and it was featured at the Grammys in a wonderful tribute performance by Jennifer Hudson.
The ‘Heart’ episode of ‘Glee’ airs on Valentine’s Day on FOX.
