Out of more than 30 athletes from New Jersey competing in the summer games, our Jersey Girls are proving fierce in Rio. Old Bridge gymnast Laurie Hernandez is coming home with two pieces of shiny hardware — silver and gold medals!

The Middlesex County teen has been enjoying all the support from loved ones and celebrities alike, including "The Fault In Our Stars" author John Green.

Dunellen track phenom Sydney McLaughlin had a rough first race, but hung in to advance to the semifinals Tuesday night. The newly 17-year-old competes in the 400-meter hurdles.

It was a packed house Monday night for a viewing party at Union Catholic High School in Scotch Plains. Next month, "Syd the Kid" returns to that high school gym as a senior.

Our two Jersey Olympic fencers also secured bronze medals. Dagmara Wozniak of the Avenel section of Woodbridge and Ibtihaj Muhammad of Maplewood are both veterans on the U.S. Women's Saber Team.

There's still plenty of competition in Rio before the Olympics wrap up with closing ceremonies on Sunday.

Proud Jersey Girl Erin Vogt’s first reporting gig involved her Fisher Price tape recorder. As a wife and momma of two kiddies, she firmly believes that life’s too short to drink bad coffee.  A fan of the beach, Dave Grohl and karma, in no particular order.
