Sometimes it's the littlest of things...a random act of kindness...that remind you about the good people in our area.

Yesterday I was at the grocery store with my 12-year old son Benjamin. He had some items on his shopping list that he wanted to get, so he took the cart while I went to produce to get what I needed.

I found him waiting in line at the deli counter, which was quite crowded. He had never gone to the deli counter before, so I wasn't sure if he'd know what to do. I went over and asked him if he had taken a number, and he said that he didn't know he had to do that.

So I showed him where the numbers were and he took one, and then I told him I was running to the dairy section to grab some yogurt.

I came back a minute later and saw a woman exchanging numbers with him. She had overheard what happened and knew he had been waiting in line longer than she had, so she gave him her number so that he could go next. For people in NJ who are always in a rush...that was a really nice thing to do in my book!

I made sure to tell her I saw what she did and thanked her. She didn't have to do it....and she certainly didn't do it for my benefit (I only caught the tail end and wasn't even there when she started talking to him about exchanging tickets). She did it to be kind to a stranger; a pre-teen.

I love the little random acts of kindness that sometimes get overlooked. I bet they happen all the time and we just have to keep our eyes open to notice them!

Have you been the recipient of a small act of kindness?
