Heavy rain and wind that kept many awake has left behind power outages and minor flooding as it all moves to east and cold air returns.Drivers may encounter large puddles and ponding on some roads after heavy rain overnight fell on ground that is frozen despite yesterday’s mild temperatures.

According to its outage map, as of 8AM JCP+L is making progress restoring power with 25,000 customers out with Monmouth, Ocean,Somerset, Warren, Morris & Hunterdon counties appearing to be the hardest hit. PSE+G’s outage map shows at least 18,000 in the dark with Burlington, Bergen & Union counties the hardest hit. Atlantic City Electric’s outage map indicates over 5,000 without power in its service area.

A cold front delivered bands of heavy rain and wind gusts of 50 to more than 60 mph. Those winds caused snapped trees and downed power lines; the highest official gust recorded being 58 MPH in Sandy Hook early this morning at 3:10AM recorded by the National Weather Service.   Flood warnings are posted in northeast Morris County and Bergen and Passaic counties.

Winds should remain strong all day as overnight temperatures in the 50s drop back into the 40s as the day goes on.
