The Monmouth County SPCA has gone above and beyond in spending the weekend rescuing and treating hundreds of dogs from a hoarding situation in Howell. Here's info on how you can help, whether it be with dog food, a donation, or being able to foster or adopt one (or more) of the dogs.

Close to 300 dogs in a 1800-square foot home. Officials call it the worst incident of hoarding they have ever seen. Most are Pugs, Chihuahuas and Yorkshire Terriers. Many were living on bookshelves. Firefighters used thermal imaging equipment to find dogs that were trapped in the walls.

The MCSPCA is in need of monetary donations after rescuing these precious animals in order to provide vaccinations, microchips, spay/neuter surgeries, food, shelter, and general compassionate care to the rescued dogs. It costs around $20 per day, per dog so please consider donating towards these dogs.

The MCSPCA has set up a special page so that all donations will go directly towards this case. CLICK HERE to make your donation. Or, checks can be mailed to:

MCSPCA, Howell Case, PO Box 93, Eatontown, NJ, 07724

The MCSPCA is also in need of foster homes for several of the dogs they are housing. Rescued dogs, especially in cases like this, have a much easier time adjusting to their new surroundings in a home environment rather than in a shelter. If you are able to foster a dog, please email Fostering@monmouthcountyspca.org.

Shelter items needed: With the influx of dogs taken into the shelter, they are in need of blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, Science Diet dog food, and Purine ONE wet puppy food. Donations can be dropped off at either of the shelter locations (260 Wall St., Eatontown, or Freehold Raceway Mall Adoption Center.)

You can also visit the MCSPCA Amazon Wish List to make a donation by CLICKING HERE.

And, finally, you can help by adopting one of these dogs once they go up for adoption. They are not ready yet, so stay tuned to find out when they will be able to go home with a forever family. They must be medically cleared, spayed/neutered, and assessed behaviorally before they will be ready to meet potential adopters. With the amount of dogs the shelter took in, it may take 1 - 2 weeks before they become available for adoption.

But remember -- the MCSPCA already has plenty of dogs and cats waiting patiently to be given a home, so please also consider them when adopting a pet.
