A year ago today, I survived a heart attack. I was very lucky. I want to use the anniversary as an opportunity.

I was always one of those guys. My family has a history of heart disease on my Mom and Dad's side, but I didn't want to go to the doctor. I was too young for a heart attack. I didn't feel sick. I didn't want to take pills, and I certainly didn't want to be told I couldn't eat whatever I wanted. My theory worked great. Right up until the heart attack.

Think about it for a minute. I didn't want to know something was wrong with my heart. Was I too scared to hear those words? Of course I was. Who wouldn't be. But I'm here to tell you, not knowing you have heart trouble doesn't make it go away. It's that simple. And it may cost you dearly.

So, if you haven't gone to the doctor because you're scared to hear the results, take it from me. I did that, and if it wasn't for the quick amazing work of the staff at Ocean Medical Center and Dr. David Pinnelas, I wouldn't be here to give you this reminder.

And if you have a stubborn family member or friend who won't go to the doctor, share this with him or her, or sit down with them and read it together. I promise you, I'm not preaching to you. I'm just hoping this message gets through to you someone you love.

I know it's not easy, and it can be frightening, but don't ignore your health. Make an appointment today. Do it for the people in your life who need you around.
