A man convicted of murder in the 2010 death of an Arizona State University student who was dragged by a car during a robbery was sentenced to life in prison with the chance to seek parole after serving 25 years.

The sentence imposed Friday against Joseluis Marquez in the death of 21-year-old Kyleigh Sousa, who grew up in Point Pleasant,  was the lesser of two possible punishments he faced.

Prosecutors Marquez to be sentenced to life without the possibility of parole.

Sousa was standing outside a restaurant when a man in a rental car snatched her purse and drove away.

One of her arms got caught in her purse, and she was dragged about 30 feet.

She suffered severe head injuries and was eventually taken off life support.
