Saying the first day of school was not my favorite day growing up would be an extremely large understatement. It was the day I dreaded from the first minute summer vacation started.

Now kids, before you get the wrong idea, I actually enjoyed school. I liked hanging with my school friends again, and I enjoyed the school experience. It's just that I enjoyed summer a lot more.

In the summer, I didn't have to wake up in the morning, I made my own schedule and I could play baseball whenever I wanted to. It seemed that 3:00pm got there a lot faster in the summer than it ever did during the school year.

In the summer, I didn't have homework every night, I didn't need to do book reports, and I didn't have any tests to study for, so my time was basically my own.  I enjoyed summer so much that I never wanted it to end. Remember how nice that was? So each year around this time I start actually getting that same back to school feeling again.

I took it to the extreme, though. I remember crying on the first day of school every year from kindergarten to sophomore year of college. OK, maybe not that long but close enough. My poor parents. It's not that I didn't like school. It's just that I wanted what I wanted when I wanted it. I'm sure glad I grew out of that and I'm not like that anymore. :)

Quick message to the kids getting ready to start school: Enjoy it!  Most of my best memories are actually from the school year, even more than the summer! Have a great school year!
