A Monmouth County doctor has been charged in connection to a car accident early Tuesday that killed a pedestrian walking along the northbound lane in the area of State Highway 71 and Bradley Avenue in Brielle around 12:37 am.

Monmouth County Prosecutors have charged Doctor James S. McCaughan of Belmar with Causing Death While Driving with a Revoked or Suspended License as well as two motor vehicle tickets.

The victim, who has not been identified, passed away about 20-minutes after being hit by the 2018 Nissan Versa allegedly driven by McCaughan.

Dr. McCaughan was released pending trial.

The crash remains under investigation by the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office, Monmouth County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team (SCART), and Brielle Police Department.

Despite these charges, every defendant is presumed innocent, unless and until found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, following a trial at which the defendant has all of the trial rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and State law.
