Two Monmouth County girls will represent the Jersey Shore at a state skiing championship this weekend.

Kiera Gill is a 12-year-old 7th grader at Wall Intermediate School and this weekend she's competing in the Pennsylvania Alpine Ski Racing U-14 Championships at Seven Springs Ski resort in southwestern PA.

She's one of just 8 girls chosen from the Eastern PA region, where she skis with the Jack Frost race team. Kiera is a sanctioned racer for the United States Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA).

Kiera's mom Sorca says Kiera started skiing at age 7, and just seemed to be a natural. Now, she works and trains on weekends, as her team is based 2.5 hours away from home, and she can't get there during the week.

Hopefully her hard work will pay off this weekend, as she competes in the Alpine Super-G, Slalom, and Giant Slalom events. They are all timed races, involving incredibly precise turns and high speeds through a course of gates.

If she wins this weekend, she'll move on to the regional Eastern Championships, and after that she'd be onto Nationals next month.

So does Kiera have an eye on a future Olympic Games? She said while watching the skiing events during the 2014 Sochi Winter games she watched the Olympic skiiers and thought, 'I could be like them! That'd be so cool.'

When I asked Kiera if she had any advice for someone who's never skied before, she simply said, 'Be fast and take chances.'

That's some profound advice, my friend!

Also competing at this weekend's championships is Taylor Getz, another Wall Township resident, who will compete in various freestyle skiing events (like moguls and aerials -- Whoa!).

As Kiera's mom said, 'Exit 98 is representing on the slopes!'

Good luck to both girls...when I was 12, I wasn't doing anything nearly as cool as that! You've already made the Jersey Shore very proud! Way to go!

Wish Kiera and Taylor good luck in the comment section below!
