For all of the incredible generosity we all see from our neighbors in New Jersey, a recent study ranks the Garden State 45th nationwide for volunteering our time.

According to the study, reported at nj.com, just over 22% of people in New Jersey say they donated their time last year. The national average was 25.4%. The study also says the Garden State millennial population only had a 17.3% volunteer rate (49th in the nation) while baby boomers  were at 26.5% (37th in the nation).

You may wonder with all the people you know who've helped neighbors and have been there for those in need how our numbers can be so low. The answer may be in the fact that our informal volunteering numbers are pretty high. The study also found that 65.5% of residents in New Jersey were involved in informal volunteering, which is 3% above the national average.
