Shrewsbury area residents may soon have another option for groceries.

A zoning approval hearing with take place on January 30th to decide if Saker Shoprites can open a new store in the space currently occupied by the Shrewsbury Business Center.

The three office buildings that make up 1151-1157 Shrewsbury Ave. would be demolished, and a nearly 90,000 foot ShopRite supermarket would be built in its place.

The property is adjacent to Shrewsbury Plaza, which sits at the corner of Rt. 35 and Shrewsbury Ave. (Which, by the way, has a vacant grocery store, since Acme closed in the spring...thanks to a newer Acme (formerly A&P) literally across the street in the Tinton Falls plaza...all just south of Trader Joe's. Got it?)

The Two River Times reports that if the plan is approved, the store could be open by 2018.

I'm actually all for giving more options when it comes to groceries, so I don't hate the idea, but I do wonder what the traffic will be like on Shrewsbury Ave. when this gets built!
