The life snuffed out in a New Year's morning crash on Route 1 in South Brunswick belonged to a Toms River 13-year-old.

South Brunswick police said that Blanca Azucena Hernandez Vargas died Friday night at Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center in New Brunswick. She attended school at Toms River Intermediate North.

"The school is deeply saddened at the loss of someone so young," said Toms River Regional Schools District spokesperson Tammi Comer-Millar, adding that the district crisis team is in place to support both the school and the family.

Another passenger in the same car, Cirilo Velazquez-Roja, 21, of Lakewood, remains in critical condition. Ilda Hernandez, 21, of Toms River, has been upgraded to stable condition, authorities said.

The remaining five involved in both cars were treated for life-threatening injuries. They are: Azel M. Hernandez Vargas, 21, of Toms River, driver of the 2005 Nissan Sentra in which the victim rode; Sarah Zollner, 19, of Toms River, a passenger in the same car; and Paramjit Singh, 59, Rajinder Kaur, 59, and Harinder Kaur, 32, all of North Brunswick, who occupied a 2009 Nissan Quest.

Police said the Sentra was crossing over Route 1, headed for Deans Lane, when the Quest minivan broadsided it in the northbound lanes and sent it into a utility pole.

The crash is still under investigation. Anyone with information that can help fill in details can contact South Brunswick PD Officer William Merkler or Sergeant Gary Holsten at (732) 329-4000, ext. 7472.
