With the holiday weekend upon us, I got to thinking how my family used to celebrate Easter and was wondering how others celebrated.

Does this sound familiar to you?

When I was a kid in Brooklyn, I don't remember much in the way of Easter Egg Hunts (Mama C would probably beg to differ!) but I do remember that every Easter when I woke up, my brother and I would go downstairs and find presents from the Easter Bunny.

We would always leave Mr. Bunny a few carrots before we went to sleep, and in the morning there were always some carrot bits and a note thanking us for the snack and wishing us a Happy Easter. (That bunny had HORRIBLE penmanship.)

The baskets all had that ridiculous plastic grass that my brother and I somehow managed to get all over the house (again to Mama C's horror) but the standard to fun-sized chocolate and Marshmallow Peeps always signaled Easter.

I also remember occasionally getting presents, like a Barbie doll or a new Gameboy(!) game, which made Easter feel like a mini-Christmas for me...as we got older, and our parents realized that my brother and I didn't need anymore toys, the candy was still a nice treat to wake up to.

Of course we would get dressed up, go to church, packed in like sardines...

Easter dinner was a typical holiday feast with the family -- grandparents, a rotator of aunts, uncles, and cousins...and whoever else happened to show up that day.

I'm not an overly religious person these days (I know Grandma is angrily shaking her head at me from above...) but I do very much appreciate the traditions and importance of the holidays.
