HOWELL — Police say a 58-year-old man completely exposed his genitals to a woman as she sat in her vehicle outside a Wawa store on Route 9 south.

Joseph T. Battista of Jackson was cited for lewdness following the incident which police say occurred on Aug. 30.

According to Howell police, officers responded to the Wawa, just off Kent Road after a woman in her 50s called to report the incident. The woman told police she was sitting in her car, talking on the phone when a man, later identified as Battista, pulled into a parking space across from her in a white, four-door Buick.

The woman alleges that Battista was the only person in the car, and that he was staring at her. When Battista exited the vehicle, he allegedly had his genitals "clearly exposed," the woman told police.

In a statement Tuesday, police say the woman became angered and offended and told Battista that "he was on camera and going to be reported to police." Battista then told the woman he just "forgot to zipper" his pants, then walked into the store, authorities said.

The woman then took a photograph and contacted police, who were able to identify the man as Battista. Police say a criminal complaint-summons was signed against him for lewdness. He was released pending a future appearance in municipal court, authorities say.
