SPRING LAKE — Service was suspended on New Jersey Transit's North Jersey Coast Line after a man was struck and killed early in Thursday morning's commute.

NJ Transit spokeswoman Lisa Torbic said a man was struck at the Church Street crossing east of the Spring Lake station, just before 6 a.m., by train #3318, which had left Bay Head at 5:44 a.m. Service was initially suspended in both directions between Bay Head and Long Branch, according to Torbic, but resumed around 7:30 a.m.

Torbic did not disclose the man's identity.

An Asbury Park Press photo shows the train halfway across the crossing as police, fire, and rescue crews work but eventually moved away.

Witness Bud McCormick told New Jersey 101.5 about 80 people were looking for rides out of the station. Cross-honoring with buses is in effect for the North Jersey Coast Line, with bus service available between Point Pleasant and Asbury Park..

Torbic said none of the 46 passengers or crew were injured in the incident.
