The Garden States Oldest Treasures

If you love history, and you live in the Garden State, you are really going to love some of the tid bits we've dug up.

The theme of our search is simply the "oldest" things in the Garden State and some of the oldest places as well. Here's a list of some of the interesting "old" New Jersey stories you may or may not know.

Oldest firehouse. Mount Holly (you'll hear Mount Holly again later on our list, too) is the home to the oldest active volunteer fire company in the state. As a matter of fact, it's the oldest in the entire country, according to South Jersey Adventures. It was built in 1752 and still stands today.

Oldest schoolhouse. I said you'd hear Mount Holly again and here it is. The Brainerd School is the oldest one room schoolhouse in the state. It was built in 1759 and is now open for school tours, according to visitnj.org.

Oldest home in Ocean County. Andrews-Bartlett Homestead. It is in Tuckerton, and was built by Mordecae Andrews in 1699. It's near the Tuckerton Seaport and is believed to be Ocean County's oldest home according to nj.com.

One of Monmouth County's Oldest Towns. Freehold was formally established in 1693 according to the Freehold Township website. Freehold is of course the Monmouth County seat.
