Pedestrian fatally struck by vehicle in Middletown, police say

A man from the Belford section of Middletown was struck and killed on Route 36 in Middletown on Saturday night, police said Sunday.

Deputy Chief Stephen Dollinger said John Chambers, 36, was crossing the road at Main Street in Port Monmouth by a car traveling westbound. Chambers was pronounced dead at the scene and the road was closed for several hours for an investigation.

The driver, who remained at the scene after the incident, has not been charged. Police are continuing to investigate the cause and circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
