Prince Harry Visit Spurs Heightened Security [POLL/AUDIO]

During Prince Harry’s trip to Seaside Heights and Mantoloking, security is expected to be far beyond the norm according to several Seaside Heights councilmen.

The royal heir will be joined by Gov. Chris Christie to witness firsthand the devastation from Superstorm Sandy.

While both of the shore communities are accustomed to large crowds, Councilman Harry Smith says the level of security will be beyond anything people have seen.

“We’re going to have the Seaside Heights Police, the State Police, the Secret Service and Scotland Yard will be there too. We’re going to have a lot of police presence,” Smith said.

First Time Seaside Hosts a  British Royal Family Member

Christie and Prince Harry will be walking on the boardwalk in Seaside, and members of the borough’s first response teams will be greeting them on the promenade. However, Seaside Heights Councilman Tony Vaz explains spectators will have to wait on the boardwalk’s street end.

“We’re very up front with them, the opportunity will be there to maybe see him or hear him from a distance, but it won’t be an ‘up close’ situation.”

While it’s the first time a member of the British Royal family has visited Seaside Heights, Vaz remembers the borough hosting high profile visitors in the past.

“I recall years ago we had Vice President Cheney here when he was Secretary of State and we had thousands and thousands of people. Thousands.”

He expects a similar turnout for Prince Harry’s NJ visit.

Both Smith and Vaz hope that, in addition to the work still needed in some places, the visit will draw attention to the progress Seaside Heights has made in recovering from the storm.

“We look at it as a marketing opportunity to tell the world, Seaside is rebuilt, we’re open.”
