Funeral Arrangements Announced For Red Bank Police Chief

Funeral arrangements have been annonced for Red Bank Police Chief Stephen McCarthy.

The 50-year-old married father of two died Monday after battling cancer. His funeral will take place Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. St. Michael’s Church on Ocean Avenue in West End Long Branch acccording to Red Bank Green.  The viewing is Thursday from 4 p.m – 8 p.m. at the John E. Day Funeral Home on Riverside Avenue; McCarthy will be buried at Mt. Olivet Cemetary in Middletown.

Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to the McCarthy Children’s Fund.

Mayor Pasquale Menna in a message posted on the borough’s website said, “We in Red Bank are grateful for having been blessed with a man of the caliber of Chief McCarthy.  His legacy is etched in the actions of so many he trained to be examples of good public servants.

She ordered a 30-day period of mourning in Red Bank to honor the late Chief. Flags will fly at half-mast on borough buildings, police will wear a mourning band on their badges, memorial bunting will be on all buildings and Wednesday’s borough council meeting is cancelled.

She told the Asbury Park Press, “It’s wonderful to see that the position didn’t change the man, he had the same smile, was the same wonderful person as when he was hired. Most chiefs become bureaucrats; he was multifaceted.”

McCarthy joined the Monmouth County town’s police force as a patrolman in 1986 and became the department’s chief in 2010.

McCarthy also father to two children.
