A tragic case of animal abuse this morning has police looking for witnesses.

Ross Licitra, Chief of Police for the Monmouth County SPCA tells us that four kittens were found dead along Monmouth Blvd. and Myrtle Ave. in Oceanport. He says it appears the kittens may have been thrown from a moving car, but it is currently unclear whether they were still alive when they were thrown.

It is believed to have happened at some point Wednesday morning, 'between the early morning hours and 8 a.m.'

The animal medical examiner estimates the kittens were 12 weeks old.

Both Oceanport Police and the Monmouth County SPCA are looking for any possible witnesses. If you have any kind of information about this incident, call the Oceanport Police Department at (732) 222-6300 or the MCSPCA at (732) 542-0040. You can also submit your information to the MCSPCA anonymously by clicking HERE.

This is a serious offense, and is considered a third degree crime, carrying a possible sentence of 3-5 years in jail upon conviction.

Licitra said it's just a horrific act of animal cruelty. "There are so many options, there are so many people that would love to take a kitten."
