The checkpoint will be in Monmouth County between 6 p.m. Saturday and 2 a.m. Sunday according to State Police.

In a news release, police said they hoped to reduce crashes caused by intoxicated drivers.

Police added they might lose the element of surprise with the advance warning, but said people who drive drunk already know they are making a deadly decision.

Police ask that motorists who spot erratic drivers call authorities by dialing #77 from a hands-free device.
