This is National Bike Month, and this evening adult bike riders are being asked to ride in honor of those who were hit by an auto while riding their bikes on a road. Check out the info on how to join this evening's ride in Wall Township in honor of a local man who was killed last year.

The message to drivers is: SHARE THE ROAD. Let's keep bike riders SAFE!

One of our loyal listeners, Chuck McHugh from Spring Lake, was killed while riding his bike on Herbertsville Road in Howell on March 12th, 2014. He was 58. It was a hit and run, and he was left on the side of the road. CLICK HERE for that story.

The Ride of Silence is an annual national event to bring attention to public safety on roadways for cyclists. The race is dedicated to those who were injured or killed on a public highway.

The Jersey Shore Cycling Society will dedicate their ride this evening in remembrance of Chuck. Chuck's wife Sara would really appreciate any adult who can take part in this event and help raise awareness for bike riders' safety.

Although riders have the right to share the road with motorists, drivers aren't usually aware of these rights, and often aren't even looking out for cyclists. The Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks adults to ride no faster than 12 mph, wear a helmet, follow the rules of the road, and remain silent during the ride.

This is National Bike Month, so as we encourage people to get on their bikes and ride, let's keep our kids, and ourselves, safe on the roads of NJ!

This evening, starting at Allaire State Park, a Ride of Silence will have you riding your bike 8 miles (adults only) and past the scene of the accident that killed Chuck. Riders will meet at the trail head parking lot of Allaire State Park at 6:30 pm. The ride leaves PROMPTLY at 7 pm, but you have to get there by early enough to sign a waiver prior to the ride. Howell police will provide an escort for about the first two-thirds of the ride. Please wear a black arm band if you can. HELMETS AND A REAR FLASHER ARE MANDATORY. Click here for more details.
