Be aware of this...and just hang up!

The Treasury Department is warning taxpayers about a call you may receive...that is completely fake.

Scammers are calling people, claiming to be from the IRS, and demanding immediate payment.

These are aggressive, threatening calls. And, believe it or not, they're working. Scammers have gotten more than 5,000 victims to fork over millions in total. 900,00 or so scammer phone calls have been reported.

So how does the scam work? Officials say the impersonater calls and fraudulently claims to be with the Internal Revenue Service. They demand that you immediately send them a payment. What gets to the victims is that the scammer often has some personal info about the person they're calling. The scammer threatens criminal charges unless immediate payment is made.

The Treasury Department says the IRS does NOT make phone calls demanding payment. They advise you to JUST HANG UP.
