Temporary Thaw Begins In New Jersey

New Jersey is still under a State of Emergency but a bit of a warm-up will begin today and continue into Monday, when another deep freeze is forecast. After a night of temperatures around zero and wind chills below zero, the wind will diminish during the day Saturday and temperatures will rise into the 20s, enabling all those road salts and and chemicals to work.

Temperatures will be cold enough on Sunday morning for precipitation to begin falling as freezing rain in Middlesex, Mercer, Hunterdon, Somerset, Sussex, Morris and Warren counties for a Freezing Rain Advisory to be issued for slick roads.

According to WeatherUnderground.com, Sussex was New Jersey’s cold spot with a low of -9. Toms River and Somerville recorded temperatures of -7 while Millville and Lakehurst NAS reached -6.

Governor Chris Christie (R) used Twitter to report that the State of Emergency declared for Friday’s snow storm remained in effect because NJ Department of Transportation officials were concerned about black ice and the extreme cold . “We’ll continue to monitor conditions & officials will lift restrictions as appropriate,” Christie tweeted.

There were a number of accidents overnight into Saturday morning, some blocking lanes on the Garden State Parkway, I-295, I-287 and Route 35.

Christie was on Twitter during much of the storm, commenting on pictures of kids in the snow, complimenting snow crews and posting a clip of the “Hercules” scene from Eddie Murphy’s “The Nutty Professor,” in a reference to the Weather Channel’s name for the first snowstorm of 2014.

More precipitation is forecast for Sunday, expected to start as snow before turning first to a wintry mix, then rain as temperatures rise into the low 40s. But temperatures are expected to fall to Arctic levels again on Monday and Tuesday.
