Right now I am in a mixed state of denial, shock, and dread. Any forecast that includes the terms 'high winds' , 'flood warnings' and the dreaded word 'hurricane' makes me want to pick up and move away from my beloved shoreline. Like many of you, I don't know how I'd get through the devastation again.

I did a little research at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, through their Atlantic Oceanographic Laboratory, to find out the odds of being struck by a hurricane.

The good news, if you will, is that we are not in the zone for the highest odds of a hurricanes striking, like we would be if we lived in Miami, San Juan, Cape Hatteras (North Carolina) or New Orleans. Those places have up to a 48% chance of experiencing a hurricane each year.

So what are our odds from June to November each year during hurricane season of suffering another blow from a major hurricane in the category 3, 4, or 5 range ?

Check out this quote from a person at NOAH: " Keep in mind that a direct hit by a major hurricane is an extremely rare event and if I had a chance - for example - to go on a cruise in the Caribbean Sea during hurricane season, I would go without hesitation."

Not making me feel any better right now.
