The Garden State Parkway. We drive on it regularly. We complain about it's traffic a lot. And there's a lot you may not realize about it.

There's a ton of construction and changes going on now. I thought it would be interesting to go back to the early days of the Parkway. Here are some amazing numbers about the Garden State Parkway at gsphistory.com .Many of the statistics are from a 1959 Highway Authority report.

$70,000,000...the amount of tolls collected in the first five years of operation.

$108,640.77...the highest one day total of tolls collected in the first five years. It happened on August 1st, 1959 when the tolls were 25 cents and the ramp tolls were 10 cents.

$330,000,000...the cost of construction.

4300...the number of acres that had to be cleared.

7,555,000...square yards of top soil used.

So maybe the next time you're sitting in traffic you can think about all the work it took to make the road possible and you may feel a little better. Or maybe not.
