Toms River is Getting Ready to Celebrate a Big Birthday
Toms River Township will turn 250 years old in 2017.
According to Township Clerk/Historian J. Mark Mutter, Toms River Township is one of the oldest municipalities in the entire state and is actually 9 years older than the United States itself.
Mutter says they're in the planning stages of a huge birthday celebration that will take place through out the year. He says as part of that celebration, is a history and civics lesson for all the residents of Toms River. "It's not just a one-day birthday party, which it will be but it will be a history lesson for all of us to share tremendous history by going back to before our country to was even formed through to today.
Mutter said sometime this year, they're going to start with history speaking tours through out the community at various organizations, the county college and in the Toms River Schools. He said the tours will actually lead into the planning of events into 2015.
Mutter says the township was formed in 1767 by colonial citizens petitioning their government to form a new town.
