Anyone who has a pet of any kind will be shocked and disgusted at the actions of a Brick Township couple.

Saturday 3/16/13 Update:

The hospital reports: Dr. Lisa Weeth, our board certified nutritionist, has done a consult and we are working with her to slowly and safely reintroduce food to him (if fed too quickly he can become very ill). It is still going to be a very long process. Dr. Greg Griffeth, our board certified dermatologist, has also done a consult and Sammy is on the appropriate treatments for his skin at this time."

And as indicated in this photo, Samurai has a new friend -- a bunny donated by "an adoring member of his wide-reaching fan club," a hospital representative said.

While the hospital will not be charging for Samurai's care during the course of his treatment there, due to community requests, a fund has been created to support the dog's future needs.

A hospital representative says that those interested in donating can send a check to Red Bank Veterinary Hospital, 197 Hance Avenue, Tinton Falls, NJ 07724. Be sure to note that your donation is for the Morgan/Samurai Fund.

"Please remember that our nation’s animal shelters are full of animals in need of loving homes. Many of them could very easily have ended up in the same situation as Samurai," a hospital representative wrote. "If your lifestyle permits you to adopt another pet, please consider opening your heart and home to a shelter pet in honor of Samurai."

"Samurai", Associated Humane Societies

The staff at the Associated Humane Society named this cocker spaniel "Morgan" after a man dropped the very sick animal off at their facility in Tinton Falls.

According to the Associated Humane Society:

Workers began to shave down the horrendous, urine and feces soaked coat of this dog, which had imprisoned him for an interminable length of time. As the coat was being shorn, it revealed sores, open wounds, urine scalding and more. The aging male dog was then sent to an emergency vet hospital for care.

The man claimed to have found the dog tied up in a black plastic bag on the side of Belmar Boulevard in Wall Township on Thursday.

Victor "Buddy" Amato, the Chief Humane Law Enforcement Officer with the SPCA, told NBC 4 New York the very man who brought the dog in and his wife were charged with several counts of animal cruelty and interfering with an investigation after "interviews with the suspects and facts presented."

NBC 4 New York identified the the couple as Keith Morgan and Shauna Morgan of Sawmill Road in Brick Township. Both were arrested Friday night and face as much as six months in prison. More time is possible if the dog doesn't pull through.

It is believed that the dog was in poor health before being abandoned on the side of the road.

Friday night it was learned the dog's name is Samurai. The staff at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital are affectionately calling him "Sammy." Samurai is currently in severe condition and hooked up to two separate IVs at the Red Bank Veterinary Hospital in Tinton Falls.

For more information on Morgan, e-mail tintonfallsahs@aol.com or call AHS at 732-922-0100. The Society is located at 2960 Shafto Road in Tinton Falls, they are open 7 days a week for adoptions from noon until 4 p.m.

I suggest you make a donation in support of Morgan. The "Res-Q Fund" helps the Associated Humane Society assist needy orphans.

While the Brick couple have been charged with "several counts of animal cruelty," what should the punishment be? Is a monetary fine really enough?

These "people" need to see the inside of a jail cell for quite some time.
