Have you lost someone to cancer? Do you have a family member or friend currently fighting cancer? Here's a worthwhile way to show your love and support.

The American Cancer Society Relay for Life is the world's largest fundraising event to fight every cancer in every community. Relay for Life raises critical funds to help those currently battling cancer, those who may face a diagnosis in the future, and those who may avoid a diagnosis altogether thanks to education, prevention, and early detection.

Relay for Life ranks as the largest community-focused event in the world and engages more than double the amount of participants and survivors than the next top fundraising event.

So help finish the fight against cancer by starting or joining a Relay for Life team in your area and help raise funds to help save lives. Celebrate the people in your life who have battled cancer, and remember those you lost. You'll be surprised how many people you'll meet who have been through the same thing as you and who are there to support you because they get it. They have also lost a loved one to cancer. They have also helped someone battle cancer in the fight for their life. Or maybe they themselves have cancer...or have overcome it.

You'll experience all kinds of emotions -- tears during the luminary remembrance candlelight ceremony; joy as survivors are acknowledged. It is an experience you will never forget. Great for your kids to be a part of, too.

So how does it work? Hundreds of Relay For Life events are being held in so many locations in Monmouth and Ocean Counties alone (check out some of them on the list below). Teams and individuals, families and kids, friends, neighbors and co-workers all camp out at a school track, field, park, or fairgrounds. Everyone takes a turn walking or running around a track or path. Each team has at least one person on the track at all times.

Funds are raised in the weeks or months leading up to the event. And it's that kind of awareness that helps the American Cancer Society save lives.

Money raised funds groundbreaking cancer research, supports education and prevention efforts, helps fund compassionate support programs to help cancer patients and their families, and provides free information and critical services for people with cancer who need help.
