Weekend Box Office Report: ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2′ Swings Into First Place

Sony

As expected, ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2‘ opened the summer movie season in style, overcoming mixed reviews to dominate the top 10 and cause every other film’s weekend gross to tumble. Coming weeks will see if it can do the business of the other films in the franchise, but this is a strong start to what looks to be a jam-packed summer.

Film Weekend Per Screen
1 The Amazing Spider-Man 2 $92,700,000 $21,277 $92,000,000
2 The Other Woman $14,200,000 (-42.7) $4,385 $47,345,000
3 Heaven Is for Real $8,700,000 (-39.4) $2,969 $65,600,000
4 Captain America: The Winter Soldier $7,762,000 (-52.1) $2,442 $237,143,000
5 Rio 2 $7,600,000 (-45.3)
$2,293 $106,470,000
6 Brick Mansions $3,545,000 (-62.8) $1,339 $15,482,000
7 Divergent $2,175,000 (-40.6) $1,327 $142,662,000
8 The Quiet Ones $2,000,000 (-48.5) $987 $6,761,000
9 God’s Not Dead $1,769,000 (-37.0) $1,330 $55,564,000
10 The Grand Budapest Hotel $1,735,000 (-29.4) $1,963 $51,506,000

With $92 million in its opening weekend, ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2′ opened higher than ‘The Amazing Spider-Man,’ but failed to top the opening weekend of ‘Captain America: The Winter Solder‘ from last month. But it was close enough to not matter too much — a $92 million opening is still a $92 million weekend. If word of mouth is strong, this is the kind of gross that should lead to a $300 million total, but we’ll have to see what happens next week. After all, the previous film only made $262 million in the end.

Last week’s champion, ‘The Other Woman,’ predictably fell to second place with the arrival of Spidey, taking in $14 million for a $47 million total. Don’t weep for it, though. It’ll be in the black soon enough at this rate and should linger as excellent summer counter-programming for the next few weeks.

The third place spot belonged to 2014′s biggest sleeper hit, ‘Heaven Is for Real,’ which continued to attract faith-based audiences in droves. With a weekend total of $8 million and a current gross of $65 million, it’s surpassed both ‘Son of God’ and ‘God’s Not Dead’ (which is still doing just fine in ninth place) to become the biggest Christian film in a year filled with successful Christian films.

In fourth place, ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ crumpled in the face of a new superhero movie, grossing $7 million for a $237 million gross. $250 million isn’t going to be a problem (and it goes above and beyond what Marvel wanted it to gross), but every dollar beyond that will be a bit of a miracle. Summer is here and it’s officially old news.

Right below Cap, ‘Rio 2‘ continued to do steady business, taking in $7 million for a $106 million gross. This modest-but-succesful gross puts it in the same league as ‘Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2‘ and ‘Mr. Peabody & Sherman.’ Expect to see a sequel.

The rest of the box office top 10 this week just feels like non-summer movies waiting around until the big new stuff arrives to kick them out. ‘Brick Mansions‘ and ‘The Quiet Ones‘ are only here because they’re filling space (and will vanish from memory as early as next week), while ‘Divergent‘ and ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel‘ are simply completing one final victory lap before vanishing into the gaping maw that is the Summer.
