Talk about kicking people when they're down. A local man is in police custody, accused of despicable crimes against people who had already experienced devastation.

Robert Kovacs of Toms River was picked up by Brick police, for allegedly looting up to 12 Sandy-damaged homes, the latest one on Toronto Drive, with possibly more victims out there.

Kovacs was placed in the Ocean County Jail in Toms River, with bail set at $30,000.

If found guilty, I think we can agree this guy is among the lowest of the low. His victims not only had their homes and lives turned upside down by the storm, then they have what few salvageable possessions left stolen by this fool?

I don't understand how one human being could do that to another.

I'm sure a lot of you would like to have five minutes alone with him in a windowless room, while others would just want to see him in jail for a few years.

I don't know what the proper punishment is, but I do think he should have to face each and every family he stole from, provide some kind of restitution, and get down on his knees to apologize.

It's just sad all around. This guy is a member of our community, and a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. We need to do better as a whole.
