Up until now there has been a National Toy Hall of Fame, but not an official Video Game Hall of Fame. That's about to change!

You may have been a child when some of these games first came out, and now your kids may now be avid gamers, so it's about time that the new World Video Game Hall of Fame is announced.

For all of the gaming industry's lists of games-of-the-year, video game awards and best-ever lists, there has never been a permanent, concrete gaming award.

The World Video Game Hall of Fame will be housed at the Strong National Museum of Play, which also houses the National Toy Hall of Fame and the International Center for the History of Electronic Games. Sounds like a great road trip for the whole family, located in Rochester, NY!

Finalists for the Hall of Fame include Pong, Space Invaders, Minecraft, Super Mario Brothers, Pac-Man, Legend of Zelda, Pokemon, The Sims, Sonic the Hedgehog, Angry Birds, Tetris, Doom, World of Warcraft, Fifa Soccer, and Oregon Trail.

A committee of 24 international scholars and experts in video games and their role in society will vote for the top 5. Games not chosen will be eligible next year, just like with the toy museum.

In an informal survey of gamers as to who should get inducted into the first World Video Hall of Fame, The Sims is currently winning by a large margin, with Super Mario Bros hot on its heels!

The first inductees will be announced on June 4th for the inaugural class.
